Of course it"s not wrong to be a non-Muslim in this country. Not wrong to be a Christian or Catholic or other religion. Conversely, it is not a problem to be a Muslim in a non-Muslim majority country like the United States. But of course the narrative is wrong and untrue, it may even have certain evil tendencies, when people shout in the middle of a certain political landscape: “Barack Obama is a Muslim. He is not American. He is Arabic, he is a stranger! "
Or here, at least since the 2014 General Election, I read and heard narrative bersliweran in medsos or dark media such as the People"s Torch: “Jokowi is non-Muslim. He"s cool, he"s Chinese, he"s a Christian … “A
The distance between the US and Indonesia is so far, but the narrative has the same evil tone and tendency. At this graduation I will not invite you to discuss the similarity of narratives and tendencies. I will only invite you to review a little of the contents of the book that was published towards the end of last year: “The Ulama Speaking of Jokowi, Islamic Connections, Nationality and Nationality” (Republika / PT Abdi Bangsa, November 2018). A first book which, as the leading Muslim scholar Prof. Dr. Azyumardi Azra in his introduction clearly explained the traces of Jokowi"s religiosity and extended family.
Unlike most other political figures who emerged in the post-reform era, Jokowi"s past was relatively unknown. He is not an elite but from an elite circle of people – and because of that Jokowi"s past and family are practically far from the highlight of the media and reporting. He is not a party leader, not a military figure, not a blue breed. He is only a "furniture trader". Because it was different from other figures such as Gus Dur, Megawati, SBY or Prabowo, the footsteps of Jokowi"s past and family were relatively unknown – except perhaps by people close to him. Because he is not well known at the national level, he is the subject of a “free interpretation” narrative – including being a victim of the narrative of “nggladrah hawra kadrah” with certain tendencies, which is often a tool to attack Jokowi"s political legitimacy: non-Muslim Jokowi, Jokowi aseng, Jokowi Christian China … with various kinds of marinade.
Well, this book is the first authentic source that explains in full the side of religiosity and Jokowi"s cultural-religious traces and his extended family. Not only is religiosity associated with rituals and worship that involves a pure human relationship with the creator (individual piety), but also worship that is kind to virtue to others (social piety). And the source of the explanation is not from Jokowi or the Jokowi family or social media (whose fall can be less credible if the narrative comes from there), but from the ulama, Kyai, and Nyai, who are Jokowi"s Koran teachers and family, spiritual advisors, prominent ulama in the Solo and surrounding areas who interacted with Jokowi and his extended family – especially the early days long before entering politics; and the scholars and community leaders at the national level after their political leverage rose: becoming governor and then President of the Republic of Indonesia.
One of them was Nyai Hj Lilis Patimah, Caregiver of Islamic Boarding School Khalifatullah Singo Ludiro, pesantren affiliated to NU, in Mojolaban Sukaharjo, Solo. Nyai Hj Lilis founded this pesantren with his late husband, KH Agung Syuhada, a famous ulama in Surakarta. From this narration of Nyai Hj Lilis we know that Jokowi and his extended family were not only Muslims in terms of personal rituals – carrying out prayer services, fasting in the month of Ramadan, paying zakat, performing Hajj; but also Muslims in a social sense and social piety.
From Hj Lilis we know that Mbah Noto, the nickname of Mrs. Jokowi, Mrs. Hj. Sudjiatmi Notomihardjo, not only a good Muslim woman who runs a basic service in cash. Mbah Noto is also diligent in carrying out Monday"s fasting service, active in various study groups and fostering and raising (being a regular donor) Islamic boarding school in Solo, one of which is Khalifatullah Singo Ludiro Islamic Boarding School, in Mojolaban Sukoharjo. Singo Ludiro Islamic Boarding School is not only a proof of Jokowi"s extended family"s piety, but also witnesses a special relationship between mbah Noto and Nyai Haji Lilis as one of his caregivers.
When KH Agung Syuhada died in August 2017 and visited Mojolaban, mBah Noto not only saying condolences or asking donations to the deceased"s family, but also whispering encouraging words of encouragement from a friend who both raised Singo Ludiro Islamic Boarding School. “Ibu Nyai Agung don"t be afraid. Mrs. Agung, don"t worry … We will always be with Mrs. Agung, accompanying Mrs. Agung … "" Nyai Hj Lilis"s story. Speeches that strengthen the mind, reassure and arouse optimism for the future of foster children in the Singo Ludiro Islamic Boarding School which was pioneered with her late husband. Speeches which at the same time showed social piety mBah Noto and family.
From the narrator of the Caregiver of the Indonesian Motivation Islamic Boarding School Kyai Nurul Huda Haem it was known that Mbah Noto had been a recitation activist since the 1970s. One that is routinely followed since the 1970s is the Sunday Morning Recitation held at the majelis taklim of his friend, Mrs. Hj Kusrini. Interestingly, on the same day, the Recitation of the Taklim Aisyah Assembly usually took place at the Office of Aisyisyah Muhammadiyah which happened to be the exact office opposite. The Council of Clergy on Sunday This morning is still ongoing until now.
Even so, it does not mean that Mbah Noto and his family are closed to other groups, such as Muhammadiyah. One of the ustadzah who filled out his teaching activities came from Muhammadiyah. The principle adopted by Mbah Noto and his extended family is to respect differences. “… everyone understands differently. There has a basis, here has the basis. No need for eyebrowing, "said Mbah Noto one time.
In the midst of the diverse socio-religious landscape in Solo, Mbah Noto and his family were also known to be active in the pengajian group on Jl Sambeng, Surakarta. The assembly has around 500 members, and is a combination of various religious groups in Solo. Not only from Nahdliyin circles, but also from Muhammadiyah, al-Irshad, MTA, Tabligh Jamaah even from Wahabi circles. The establishment of the joint Taklim Assembly was intended as a forum for establishing brotherhood – brotherhood among fellow Muslims.
Well, if you quote the proverb that “fruit falls not far from the tree” then it is not surprising that the character and habits of these parents eventually decline to their children. One of the activities organized by children and extended families is the routine recitation of the book “Fath al-Qarib Syarh Taqrib”. The recitation took place once a month, with serious participants around 20-30 people, and conducted at the house of Ibu Hj Titik Relawati, also known as Ibu Hj Titik Arief, who is none other than Jokowi"s younger sister. Again Ibu Nyai Hj Lilis became the regular filler of this study group.
Of course this is interesting. Not only the recitation activity, but also what was discussed in the recitation. The book “Fath al-Qarib” is a classic book popular among NU salaf-traditional pesantren. This book reviews a variety of sharia or fiqh laws in a concise, concise manner, with certain compilation patterns that can be a door or a basis for understanding wider fiqh books.
The existence of this recitation, also the presence of Nyai Hj Lilis, seems to confirm the tendency of religiosity Jokowi"s extended family culture towards NU"s religious-cultural traditions. Especially if we look at other recitation activities followed by mbah Noto and his family – for example pengajian az-Zahra, a fiqh recitation and hadith specifically for mothers. The supervisors were the speakers at this study, for example Gus Karim (KH Abdul Karim Ahmad, Caregiver of the az-Zayadi Islamic Boarding School, Surakarta), Gus Asfin (Caretaker of the Al-Huda Ponorogo Islamic Boarding School), and of course KH Agung Suhada and his wife Nyai Hj Lilis Patimah. Even if you look at the daily life of the Jokowi extended family – such as wiridan and tahlilan which are culturally in line and have a tendency close to the tradition of Amaliyah Nahdliyin.
Aside from transmitting to his daughters, blood of Mbah Noto"s activism is of course transmitted to Jokowi . When becoming a furniture entrepreneur, along with other young entrepreneurs Jokowi founded the “Bening Ati” Taklim Assembly (Bersih Hati). Gus Karim, also known as Kyai, a teacher of the Koran and Jokowi"s mentor, regularly fills in the “Bening Ati” study group. Besides Gus Karim, Kyai Abdur Rozaq (caretaker of the al-Muayyadi Islamic Boarding School), KH Nahar Surur (Caregiver at Pondok Ta"mirul Islam), and of course KH Agung Syuhada (caregiver of the Singo Ludiro Islamic Boarding School) who is close enough to Jokowi"s extended family to become a group filler pengajian Bening Ati.
Aside from being a religious activist, the habit of parents who also declined to Jokowi was the Monday-Kemis sunnah fast. The caretaker of the Al-Mizan Majalengka Islamic Boarding School KH Maman Imanul Haq, who is commonly called Kang Maman, has a special story about Monday-Kemis fasting. One time during the day of carrying out the Monday-Kemis Sunnah fast Jokowi visited his pesantren in Majalengka. As the host, Kang Maman has prepared soto kikil which is known as a typical dish. Kang Maman then tells Jokowi"s response about his Soto Kikil: “Kyai Maman, actually I"m fasting right now. But because I respect Kyai Maman, I will cancel the fast and eat the kikil soup that has been served. “
Gus Karim had another story about Jokowi while still being a Mayor in Solo. At that time he promised to meet with Jokowi at the airport. It was late, and Maghrib time arrived. Five minutes after the Maghrib prayer, he saw Jokowi"s entourage, there were about 20 cars, arriving at the airport. The group went straight into the waiting room, and then ate and drank at the table provided by the waiting room but he did not see Jokowi and his wife Iriana. “Ten minutes later I just saw Jokowi come with Ms. Iriana. From a distance, I saw Jokowi angry at the members of the group who rushed to eat and drink. Why angry? From a distance I heard Jokowi say: "Pray first, this is the time for prayer!" Apparently, Jokowi and his wife prioritized prayer first rather than eating because the maghrib time was quite short. “
Perhaps because of Jokowi"s appreciation for prayer and prayer times, it is not surprising if we see on various occasions Jokowi stopped his speech when he heard the voice of the call to prayer. It takes place automatically, does not need to be whispered by others or reminded to stop …
From the various narratives in this book we also know the stories of other social piety. When I was still active as a furniture entrepreneur and had not yet entered politics, there were always products that were sorted, not sold, could not be exported because they did not meet the required standards. Jokowi usually collects these items in one warehouse, then sells them at cheap prices. The proceeds are then donated to mosques, orphanages, or Islamic boarding schools that free education for their santri.
With a collection of narratives compiled from interviews with clerics, community leaders and close people around Jokowi and the Jokowi extended family we know authentically Jokowi"s religious religiosity footprint and his extended family. The family"s personal and social piety. So it is strange that a narrative suggests that “Jokowi is a non-Muslim”, “Jokowi Cina”, “Jokowi PKI”, “Jokowi kafir” and other similar narratives … Minimal narratives that doubt Jokowi"s “family level” and family, and impressive as if he were more Muslim and better than they narrated with spices in such a way … Without hiding, with a source that had no clear origin. How come I have the heart?
Ah, immediately remembered a quote that was often written and pinned to Kanjeng Imam Ash-Syafi"i: “Look for a leader who has many slander arrows leading to him. Follow the many slandered ones. Because indeed he is struggling on the right path. “
